The Acer Predator Helios 300 PH315-51-78NP is a 2018 model, there are two classes available, and it’s the 15-inch and 17-inch type. We are reviewing the 15-inch class model that features a Full HD IPS panel screen with 144Hz Refresh Rate.
When we look at the design, there aren’t many modifications that have made on it. So, the 2018 Helios 300 model looks alike to the previous (2017) model.
It provides by metallic chassis with black profile and red accents, just like the Asus TUF Gaming. Measures by 10.5 x 15.3 x 1.1 inches, and weighing approximately 5.51 pounds or 2.5 kg.
Based on its size and weight, it is a little thicker and not very portable for a 15-inch laptop. So, you’ll feel it in your backpack, but I think it’s still something that can be viable to carry around with you.
The body claims made of metal, but it’s not entirely. The laptop’s screen bezels and the area on the underside are made by plastic-clad, while the outer lid and the keyboard deck made of all metal.
KEYBOARD & TOUCHPAD
The keyboard that comes with Helios 300 PH315-51-78NP is a chiclet-style keyboard and also features a dedicated numeric keypad just like other 15 inch laptops. Also, the keyboard keys are black and have white backlit, while the WASD keys have painted red accents.
It’s a short-stroke keyboard, as the keys only travel 1.2 mm into the frame on a press. Not all gamer comfortable with the short-stroke keyboard, so in this case, I think it depends on the user’s taste.
For regular use such as word processing and other general tasks, there’s no issue on the keyboard. The plastic made trackpad is good enough. It has red accents as well, easy to use, track precisely, and able to perform without a hiccup with daily uses.
Just like most of the modern gaming machines, this unit also features with adequate connectivity. On the left side, you’ll find an Ethernet port, a single USB 3.1 Type-C port, an HDMI port, a USB 3.0 port, an SD card reader, and a Kensington lock.
While on the right side, it gives you a connection point for the power adapter, set of two USB 2.0 ports, and a headphone jack. However, there’s still no Thunderbolt 3 on this updated model.
Predator Helios 300 PH315-51-78NP features with a 15.6-inch Full HD widescreen display, and it is an IPS LED-backlit panel. The native resolution is 1920X1080 pixels, with a matte finish over the screen so you could use it even in bright lighting conditions.
Furthermore, the laptop screen quality is amazingly fast, and it has a 144Hz refresh rate, which is slightly better than the first model of Asus ROG Strix Hero Edition with 120Hz capacity.
With this refresh rate capacity, it’ll able to shortens the time it takes for frame rendering and gives its users an excellent in-game experience and also when watching high-quality videos.
Because this is a gaming machine and intended for running most entertainment, productive, and editing programs and software. So, how well and efficient it performs is the primary reason for most of the users to look first.
Powered by Intel Core i7-8750H with Hexa-core processor supported with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics processor, and 16 GB of memory, you can make most of the productivity task done without any issues.
The Hexa-core processor and 16 GB of RAM is a high technology composition for productivity works, and it’s beneficial, especially for the creative interactive media user.
Besides, the PCIe NVME SSD type of storage helps this laptop in reducing the bootup times, and applications and games load times. However, it only has 256 GB of capacity, which does not offer adequate room for some of the modern users today. Luckily, it has an extra empty accessible slot for a 2.5-inch hard drive or SSD.
With a 1080p and 144Hz refresh rate display capacities, the Predator Helios 300 PH315-51-78NP is one of the great gaming machines at stores. It can carry a performance quality of 60FPS or higher on almost every game.
For mid-range gaming laptop class, Predator Helios 300 does effectively well-perform, thanks to the GeForce GTX 1060 graphics processor.
You can expect the favorite triple-A games such as Bioshock Infinite, GTA V, Tomb Raider, and Far Cry 4 played at reputable framerates.
It comes with the same 4-cell Li-Ion battery with 3220 mAh capacity, like the previous (2017) model. The manufacturer claims it can serve you up to 7 hours. However, the actual battery life may be significantly less than they have stated.
In addition to that, with 3220 mAh battery capacity, you can expect it can last up to 3 to 4 hours with regular use.
However, when gaming, it may last approximately up to one hour, and it is one of the bad things that come with this unit. So, you’ll need to connect to a power outlet if you are planning on longer sessions.
Currently, this is our best pick for the mid-range gaming machine. For its prices and class, the Predator Helios 300 PH315-51-78NP is a solid choice, its screen display refresh rate is awesomely fast and also powerful.
However, it has a brief battery life, only deliver a 256 GB of SSD capacity, which may affect for few, and for some views, the body design may not be portable enough.
However, it has a good-built, and when it comes to the price tag, currently, it’s hard to find the second choice that can rival its power.
